Item desirability matching in forced-choice test construction

چکیده

The forced-choice method has been proposed as a viable strategy to prevent socially desirable responding (SDR) on self-report non-cognitive measures. ability of the eliminate SDR stems from matching items that are perceived equally into item-blocks. gold standard in quantifying similarity between terms desirability “mean difference index”, is, absolute items' mean ratings. This index relies assumption have one true value, efficiently and unbiasedly estimated by their respective means, may fail if this does not hold. To circumvent issue, we propose indexing with several robust measures agreement (i.e., inter-item indices). Using an empirical example, show relying lead suboptimal item-block assembly relatively poor respect desirability. R code for computing indices set ratings is provided, recommendations applied researchers.

Item Response Models for Forced-Choice Questionnaires: A Common Framework.

In forced-choice questionnaires, respondents have to make choices between two or more items presented at the same time. Several IRT models have been developed to link respondent choices to underlying psychological attributes, including the recent MUPP (Stark et al. in Appl Psychol Meas 29:184-203, 2005) and Thurstonian IRT (Brown and Maydeu-Olivares in Educ Psychol Meas 71:460-502, 2011) models...

Using forced choice to test belief bias in syllogistic reasoning.

In deductive reasoning, believable conclusions are more likely to be accepted regardless of their validity. Although many theories argue that this belief bias reflects a change in the quality of reasoning, distinguishing qualitative changes from simple response biases can be difficult (Dube, Rotello, & Heit, 2010). We introduced a novel procedure that controls for response bias. In Experiments ...

Does number of options in multiple choice tests affect item facility and discrimination? An examination of test-taker preferences

Multiple Choice tests are utilized widely in educational assessment because of their objectivity, ease of scoring, and reliability. This study aimed to compare IF and ID of MC vocabulary test items and attempted to find whether these indices are affected by the number of options. To this end, four 20 item stem equivalent vocabulary tests (3-, 4-, 5-, and 6-option MC) were administered to 194 (1...

Detection of inadequate effort on the California Verbal Learning Test-Second edition: forced choice recognition and critical item analysis.

The Forced Choice Recognition (FCR) and the Critical Item Analysis (CIA) indices of the California Verbal Learning Test-II (CVLT-II) have been identified by the CVLT-II test developers as potentially useful, brief screening indicators of effort in neuropsychological assessment. This retrospective study analyzes performance on these measures in three groups: (1) clinically referred individuals; ...
